Ayurveda Certification: Mission and Approach

Educational Mission

The School of Ayurveda is committed to offering the most complete and well-rounded educational experience through a combination of comprehensive theory, hands-on training, and understanding the universal spiritual foundations of life and health.

Our unique training process aims to inspire students’ thirst for understanding by creating an internally developed education rather than the notion of external acquisition model. Through engendering students to ask more questions rather than be flooded with answers; to favor intuition over memorization; to experience knowledge as more than just as a part of career – but to realize it as a part of their entire present life experience; students are able to assimilate intellectual understanding into experiential world wisdom. We find this model to be a more organic and natural approach to learning and our students graduate with confidence in their, studies and as well, their life path.

Ayurveda is much more than the ‘science of medicine’; it is defined as the ‘science of life’. Our Ayurvedic program prepares students physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, with the insights and ability to harmoniously live their lives and to help others understand and harmonize the wholeness of their lives. This ability is due to understanding and working with the underlying laws of nature.

This school also is dedicated to the integration of authentic, ancient Vedic education with the modern thought – especially incorporating the most enlightened Western ideas of today. We dedicate ourselves to bridging the semantic gap between Eastern and Western schools of thought.

The goal of the program is to keep Ayurveda relevant for the times, and so incorporates spiritual, intuitive, and energy methods that, when possible, can achieve faster healing times than with herbs and other therapies. In this dawning, golden age, students are taught to see clients as whole and divine rather than see them as disease—as was the past western paradigm.

Our Teaching Approach

This program exceeds the educational guidelines of all US Ayurvedic associations.

Just as Ayurveda itself is a holistic, spiritual, natural healing and lifestyle option, we feel that education too, should be offered in a holistic, spiritual, and natural manner.

Where conventional education emphasizes memorization and filling the brain with facts; i.e., facts = knowledge. Alternative education believes that experience, questioning, experimenting, and intuition are the keys to truly knowing something.

“I’m not trying to prove anything, by the way. I’m a scientist and I know what constitutes proof. But the reason I call myself by my childhood name is to remind myself that a scientist must also be absolutely like a child.

If he sees a thing, he must say that he sees it, Whether it was what he thought he was going to see or not. See first, think later, then test. But always see first. Otherwise you will only see what you were expecting. Most scientists forget that. … the other reason I call myself Wonko the Sane is so that people will think I am a fool. That allows me to say what I see when I see it. You can’t possibly be a scientist if you mind people thinking that you’re a fool.” - Douglas Adams Hitchhiker trilogy:

Too often new graduates who spend years memorizing their discipline, experience mental burnout and are unsure how to even begin to translate their intellectual education into real life. Conversely, alternative education-trained students find that they are learning about life as they learn about Ayurveda; Ayurvedic education becomes a metaphor for their whole life.

Therefore, students who live Ayurvedically during their student years, are already growing and integrating education, service, self-healing, and self-reflection into their lives.

Education is a development from within, not an accretion from without; it comes through workings of natural instincts and not in response to external force; it is an expansion of natural powers, not an acquisition of information; it is life itself, not a preparation for a future state remote in interests and characteristics from the life of childhood. – Rousseau

Our teacher-friends tell us how the current educational system is so stressed that many teachers, forced to teach unnatural curriculum, take prozac. Conversely, our Ayurvedic alternative education teachers are required, like their students, to follow their own Ayurvedic lifestyle – teaching by example.

Living, teaching, and studying in the context of an Ayurvedic lifestyle avoids ADD, depression and, quite the opposite, fosters an environment for great personal, natural inspiration and genius to flourish.

Live Class Training

In-person in New York/New Jersey/North Carolina; &/or Video Web-Classroom

Whether you learn best alone or in a class, the live class experience enhances your learning and you hear other student’s point of views and creative ideas. While students successfully learn how to be top-notch ayurveda practitioners without live class, the option is offered for those who wish to take advantage of the more personal dimension of learning. Live classes are done online in webinar video classroom, or in person live – in whatever country Swamiji is in (USA, Guatemala, Peru, India etc.). There are month-long options for 4+ students to study live; summers in NY, USA and winters in San Marcos, Guatemala. Live Class Options

  • 5+ students 300 hours (150 hours/year)
  • 4 students 240 hours (120 hours/year)
  • 3 students 180 hours (90 hours/year)
  • 2 students 120 hours (60 hours/year)
  • 1 student 60 hours (30 hours/year)

Whenever there are 4 or more students enrolled in the live class, students who have had fewer hours of live classes may join these classes for a nominal fee of $20/hour. Live seminars for students will be held in New Jersey at Akasha Ayurveda Center in Colt’s Neck; and in Charlotte, NC. Other centers will be listed as they develop   Hands-On Consultation Internship We have found the best learning is ‘understanding’ resulting from hands-on experience. So from the third month, students begin their internship consultations with 2-3 clients a month. When your local center brings in the clients who want an internship consultation, or if your own clients from your current job sign up for the internship consultation, the client receives a discounted consultation rate and students receive a stipend. Students conduct 20 consults and 20 follow-ups. Specially designed, step-by-step forms are provided that easily guide students to successful internship consultations. Students submit the forms to their teacher for review before offering the suggestions to the client. By the time students complete their 20 follow-up consultations, they see the results in their clients. These experiences help students crystallize the theory—they discover just how much they really have learned; and they have confidence they can help clients because they see they have been helping. Finally, they ‘know’ how to begin their practice once they graduate (they are not bogged down by pure theory).
