of Shamans, Tantra & Consciousness

In an interview in Travelling Between the Worlds, Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche explains Tibetan Bon’s three levels of spiritual practice.

1. Shamanic – working with external (gross) elements & the spirits of the gross elements to heal people, village, and the planet. Their goal is to live in harmony/balance with spirit and nature, helping people who are ill or have career issues; and with bringing rain etc. The goal is when war & hunger are replaced by health & prosperity.

2. Tantra – working with subtler aspects of the internal elements/the subtler aspects of the mind (deities, who are more enlightened than rock or earth spirit). The goal is realization for yourself or others. A teacher is necessary for it is more complicated than shamanism.

3. Dzogchen – working with the subtlest form of the 5 elements – the most sacred and subtle mind – this is very pure awareness or consciousness. You are not working with spirit or deity, but with pure light. These are the yogis who gaze at the sky and rest the mind and are not much concerned with spirit or deities. They are in pure meditation.

This is a nice insight into three realms, though they seem to be quite interrelated, each being necessary to have some attention on.
