Ayurveda Springtime Recipe for Balance

Swamiji’s Spring Surprise

Kicharee is a mix of rice & dal that is at once a detox and a rejuvenative meal. It is said that some yogis in the Himalayas eat only kicharee as their entire sustenance.

Here is a Springtime kicharee for all doshas (tridoshic); it contains a bit more for detoxing for the season. Ideally, organic foods & spices are advised for greater health.

Serving: 5 -6 people

Ingredients: (use fresh, whole herbs when possible)
2 cups split yellow mung dal (or whole green mung dal)
2 cups white basmati rice
2 inches fresh ginger (peel the skin and chop finely or grate)
12 fresh tulsi or basil leaves (or 1/2 tsp. tulsi or basil powder)
2 handfuls fresh cilantro leaves
10 whole cardamom pods or 1/2 tsp cardamom powder
10 whole cloves pr 1/2 tsp clove powder
2 inches piece of cinnamon bark broken in pieces, or 1/2 tsp cinnamon powder
10 black peppercorns or 1/2 tsp black pepper
6 bay leaves
3 mustard seeds
1/2 tsp turmeric
1/4 tsp licorice DGL (de-glycerized) powder
1/4 tsp rock salt (or sea salt as a second best option)
5 tsp. ghee
2 1/4 cups water (if using a pressure cooker)
or 4-5 cups (if using a regular pot)

Preparation:
1. Ideally soak the dal overnight or for a few hours. This makes it more digestible.
If you use a pressure cooker soaking time is less
2. Wash the rice and dal twice in fresh water.
3. Add the rice, beans, salt, and water to a pot and bring to a boil.
4. Reduce the flame to a low boil and cook for 10-15 minutes.
5. After 10 minutes add the mustard seeds and ghee to a pan and heat until the three seeds pop.
6. Reduce the flame to low and add the remaining spices, stirring until the spices aromas unlock and can be smelled.
7. Now add the finished rice and beans into the pan and stir for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Your meal is ready!
Add rock salt (sindav) and pepper as needed

For a well balanced meal:
Add a vegetable soup
Add a takra drink (1/4 cup plain yogurt : 3/4 cup water : 1/4 tsp cumin powder & shake for 1 minute to activate its digestive powers) (this is a per person recipe)
